This is the brand-new kit of the Colonial Viper Mark VII as seen in the reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” television series. You can think of this design in two possible ways. One way is to think of it as the cutting-edge Viper that was used by the Colonial forces. The other way to think of it is as the Viper that was shut down by the Cylon computer virus that was sent through the Colonial forces mainframe, leading to the defeat of the Colonies.

The Mark VII Viper was the most-advanced human fighter seen in the series, and this model accurately portrays the standard version of the fighter as shown over the course of the series. This is not the updated version seen as Apollo’s fighter during later seasons.

The model is molded in light gray styrene with engraved panel lines. The parts are beautiful, and are free from flash. A clear stand is included. The kit is neat in that it offers the builder a choice of either a female or male pilot (interchangeable torsos, with or without the “attributes”). The option of raised or lowered landing gears is also offered. Aftermarket accessories for the kit include photoetched brass parts from Paragrafix (part no. PGX-144), available through StarshipModeler.com.

Markings are included for both the Battlestar Galactica and the Battlestar Pegasus. The builder also has a choice of pilot names: Narcho, Starbuck, Hot Dog, Apollo, Chuckles, or Kat. Cylon raider “kill” markings are also offered, in accordance with Admiral Cain’s order to paint victory markings on the Vipers to encourage high morale.

I did find one error in the instruction sheet on my review sample. On page 3 of 6, at the bottom of the page, the text says “Finish forward fuselage assembly by adding gun blister bottom parts #26 left and #27 right and guns #28 left and #30 right . . . “ The illustration to the right of the text shows gun blister bottoms #28 left and #27 right. The port-side gun blister (left) is mislabeled as #28 – it should be #26.

The completed kit measures over 11 inches long with a wingspan of 7.5 inches.
