As it says on the insert that was attached to the bottom of the box, “This is the legendary Interplanetary U.F.O. Mystery Ship, the classic sci-fi model kit that disappeared from store shelves over 30 years ago. Now she’s back in all her glow-in-the-dark glory. The assembled kit is 13 inches long and features opening docking bay doors, removable scout ship, display stand and an all-new decal set featuring original Strategic Space Command markings as well as alien space pirate markings. Kit includes detailed instructions and a new Strategic Space Command story, featuring the adventures of Midshipman Lancer Scott and his crew’s deadly encounter with the mysterious glowing spacecraft.”

When it was announced that this kit was going to reissued, modeling fans didn’t want to cheer too much until the first kit boxes arrived on hobby store shelves, but it’s definitely here! The parts are cleanly molded and don’t appear to have any flash on them.

For builders who want to complete the ship as the S.S.C. Yuri Gagarin, a full set of markings is included. For builders who opt for the alien ship, there are decals that look like they’ve been partially scraped off the hull. The decal sheet, designed by JT Graphics, also has blast patterns to simulate damage. There are also decals to provide details for the ship’s paneling, and also all of the detail inside the docking bay. The ship’s windows are also provided as decals.

Prior to this kit being reissued, only the 1960’s-vintage kits were available. When (and if) one could be located, the kits were sold for over $100.00 each.

The completed kit is about 13 inches long and just over 7 inches wide.
