Colonial Heavy 798 becomes Colonial One after Laura Roslin is sworn in as the President of the Twelve Colonies after the Cylon attack which nearly destroys humanity.

The kit’s parts are molded in white styrene, and clear parts are included for the cockpit and observation lounge windows. A clear stand is also provided. Options include landed or flying mode (extended or retracted landing gear) and extended or retracted blast guards. A neat concept sketch on cardstock is a bonus in the box.


The white styrene is rather thick with numerous gate marks on the interior sides, but the surface detailing is very nice. Unfortunately, the windows on the top of the hull and along the spine are molded without openings, but in 1:350 a scratchbuilt interior would be very small and almost invisible through the small window openings.

The only real disappointment is with the blast guards. The model parts provide two options: fully extended, almost like air brakes, or fully retracted along the hull (straight back). But neither of these options portray Colonial One as she was seen on-screen, or even on the box art or the instructions, with the blast guards on a 45-degree angle in relation to the hull. Why Moebius missed this is beyond me. However, correcting this should take relatively minor construction.

Waterslide decals are provided for all the markings needed, including the blue upper hull lines with windows, gold pinstriping and the blue conning tower markings. Builders will have a choice of two starlines: Eversun Luxury Liners or Intersun Luxury Liners. Two decals are also provided with the Presidential seal, and a larger Presidential decal is included for the stand.

This is a nice kit and, with minor surgery, will make a great addition to a Battlestar Galactica model collection. I just wish there was a Colonial One kit in scale with the previously-released kits of the Battlestar Galactica and Battlestar Pegasus.

The completed model is about 10 inches long.
