When Battlestar Galactica was rebooted in 2005, the Cylons were found to look like humans. The Colonial Defense Ministry’s computers were infiltrated, and all recent technology was rendered useless with a simple computer scan. As a result, all of the current-generation Battlestars and Vipers were shut down by the Cylons and were destroyed. The only surviving Battlestar, the Galactica, was a veteran of the first Cylon War, and was about 50 years old at the time of the attack on the Colonies. The Galactica’s Vipers, however, were all newer Mark VII models, and were lost when the Cylons deactivated their engines, and destroyed them from long range. Sharon “Boomer” Valeri and Karl “Helo” Agathon, who were in an accompanying Raptor, witnessed the destruction of Galactica’s air group.

The only fighters left at Galactica’s disposal were a group of Mark II Vipers, which were displayed in the Galactica’s starboard flight pod as part of a museum display. The reactor cores were still active, so the fighters just needed to be moved to the port side, rearmed, and recharged. Suddenly, the Galactica had fighter cover again. But the fighters also dated back to a period about 40 years earlier, and one had been flown by William “Husker” Adama when he was a fresh lieutenant during the final days of the last Cylon War.

The Moebius Viper Mk II is molded in white styrene and is cleanly molded without flash or sink marks. The panel lines are engraved, and the molding looks fantastic. The kit includes a resin pilot kit in full flightsuit. The kit also has enough interior space that if the builder wants to light the cockpit, the battery pack and wiring can all be hidden inside the fuselage. Landing gear is also included.

The kit also includes a full set of markings, including all stripes and stencils. Builders are offered a choice of building the Viper of either Captain Lee “Apollo” Adama or Lieutenant Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. One very nice feature of the kit is that it is in scale with the TOS Viper issued by Monogram in the 1970’s, reissued in the 1990’s, and recently issued as an Anniversary Edition.

This is an advanced model to build. (Moebius even says so!) Pay attention closely to sequence of events in the instructions and you will do just fine. As a caution, I found that the instrument decals for the cockpit were fairly hard to get in, plus they were thin. However, they are well worth it. The landing gear instructions, for me, were a tad confusing. I love this model, though, and if you take your time, follow the instructions to the letter, you should have a beautiful model.
